FORUM - on Energy and schools, on Friday the 3th of March 2006 in Brussels.

This forum named « Energy-Smart Schools » focuses on strategies of energy saving in schools, by setting up energy-educational projects in schools , through a closer look at the school building, the energy attitudes of it s users and the energy use as a learning tool. We want to show how the classroom can be an ideal starting point for energy projects in schools. The forum consists of four sessions, during which the question of how schools can be motivated to set up energy-educational projects, to identify energy waste, how to set up such projects and how to achieve excellence, from both the educational and from energy efficiency points of view, is examined. Each time, examples of best practice from Belgium and abroad will be presented, after which we can exchange ideas, experiences and points of view. The Soustenergy forum « Energy-Smart Schools » is intended for educators, school administrators, architects and local associations who want to set up energy-education projects in the school environment. This forum is organized in the framework of the Soustenergy project, under the InterregIIIc program.

Soustenergy - « Energy-Smart Schools » - Forum

The energy costs of schools have increased, that's why less money is available for the learning programmes. Also owners of public buildings, like schools will be obliged to show an energy certificate that announce s publicly how energy-efficient the school building is. So schools are in need of energy-efficient an s wers and of teachers eager to organise classes that treat the energy subject issues.

This forum named « Energy-Smart Schools » focus s es on strategies of energy saving in schools, t h rough a closer look at the school building, mobility issues, the energy attitudes of it s users and the energy use as a learning tool. The classroom can be an ideal starting point for energy projects in schools. The forum will be designed in four main parts, in which questions of how schools can be motivated to set up energy-educational projects, to identify areas of energy waste, how to elaborate in an interesting way such projects, and how to achieve excellence, from both the educational and from energy efficiency points of view, are examined. Each time, examples of best practice from Belgium and abroad will be presented, after which we can exchange ideas, experiences and points of view.

Inciting schools to set up energy-educational projects : Schools have to ensure quality education related to the curriculum, and energy education isn't still a priority in it. Nevertheless they are on the foreground of educating future citizens and to realise Kyoto-targets, and to ensure our energy dependence in the future. It is easier and more convincing to learn pupils the concepts of sustainable development, if those ideas are implemented t h rough the schools. The energy awar e ness of the whole school community is also important , because energy efficient schools can spend more m ea ns to educational act i vities and less to energy. A few best practices of energy awar e ness school projects will be presented, with after that an exchange of ideas.

Identifying areas of energy saving  : Identifying areas of energy saving as t h rough an energy audit is a n essential part of a n energy management system. Such a n energy audit gives an idea of the potential of energy saving in a school and learns wich mesures are possible, at what cost and what is the recuperation time. Those data and methods can also be integrated into the learning program. We will look closely at a few exemples which show how the energy-mobility audits can be used into the energy - educational activities and how fun they are to use.

Implementing energy projects  : By implementing energy efficient measures in schools the energy saving investment is paying off, that's why at the end the school can save money. In order to obtain a n energy efficient and energy-smart school a n energy coordinator - energy team can be appointed, sometimes a teacher, a technical manager or energy adviser. Explore renewable energy, sustainability, mobility wise, high performance, and energy efficiency strategies to keep your schools green, clean and energy efficient. Learn from the experience of experts about how to make energy-educational projects real .

Achieving excel l ence in energy - efficient school s : Energy - efficient School s Programs engage s students in creating energy-saving activities in their schools, using hands-on experiences , and setting up real-world projects. Through basic changes in the building management , maintenance, and individual behavior of the users , energy- smart Schools can achieve real important reductions in energy. In addition, those schools encourage students to apply the lessons of the energy-efficiency message in their homes and communities. We will look at projects that are on the foreground of energy - efficient school communities and discuss about them.

The Soustenergy forum « Energy-Smart Schools » is intended for educators, school administrators, architects and local associations who want to set up energy-education projects in the school environment. Representatives and educators from the regions of Navarra (Sp), Athens (Gr), Modena (It), Lisbon (Pt) and Krakow (Pl) also participate in the forum.

Objective

The aim of the Soustenergy - « Energy-Smart Schools » Forum is :

  • to treat basic questions about energy efficiency and mobility in schools and to present s good practices in the school environment ;
  • to look at their management, financial and other aspects of best practices in order to make them real usable for the school practice
  • to contribute to those aims by putting the question of how to r a ise the awareness of the pupils and to integrate it into energy education ;
  • to present energy related resources  into the curriculum;
  • to verify how school buildings can be made energy - efficient, by preference without any costs ;
  • to find strategies for lowering the energy bills, freeing up resources for other school activities that way .
